In previous roles the Medovate team have successfully managed medtech innovations from concept, through to market launch and onward to successful adoption and global acquisition. The team have key skills developing business cases, protecting intellectual property, prototyping, testing, fundraising and navigating the regulatory pathway to product launch.

Stuart has over 12 years’ experience leading the commercial exploitation of healthcare intellectual property. He has been directly responsible for commercial deals covering technology licensing, acquisitions and raising finance for new company formations.

Stuart was previously Commercialisation Director for Health Enterprise East where he had overall responsibility for the NHS innovation pipeline, project protection, commercialisation along with operational management of the Medtech Accelerator.

Prior to this, Stuart gained extensive experience with intellectual property management and commercial analysis whilst working for GlaxoSmithKline. He holds an MSc in the Management of Intellectual Property from the Queen Mary University of London, a Diploma in European Intellectual Property and a BSc in Human Biosciences.

Robert Donald

Investment Manager


Robert gained over 12 years’ experience managing the development and commercialisation of healthcare intellectual property within his previous role as the Senior Intellectual Property Manager for Health Enterprise East.

He has been actively involved in the successful development of multiple projects from early stage concept through to end product, working with clinical inventors throughout the development journey.

Robert holds both a degree in Biotechnology (BSc) from Reading University and a LLM in Intellectual Property Management.

Dr Anne Blackwood

As well as being Chair for Medovate, Anne is CEO of Health Enterprise East – the leading NHS innovation hub. Anne has been actively involved in knowledge transfer and intellectual property management in the life sciences for over 16 years.

Prior to Health Enterprise East, Anne worked for Cambridge Enterprise, the technology transfer office of the University of Cambridge, where she focused primarily on technologies from the biological and chemical sciences and was involved in all aspects of technology commercialisation.

Anne holds a PhD in chemistry from Strathclyde University and is a non-executive director of Ablatus Therapeutics Limited and the Medtech Accelerator Limited.

Alan Finnerty

Technology Development Manager


Alan has over 15 years’ experience in the successful development and commercialisation of innovative medical products. While working for companies such as Medtronic and Olympus across a wide range of clinical specialties, Alan has gained a deep commitment to understanding patient and clinician needs in order to deliver safer and more effective care solutions.

At Medovate, Alan is responsible for leading the company’s technologies through design, development, regulatory approval, manufacturing and delivery to the point of care while also ensuring all organisation regulatory and quality obligations are met.

Alan holds a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering from Edinburgh Napier University and a master’s degree in Manufacturing Management from the University of Cambridge. He is a member of both the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Hub.

Dr Maryanne Mariyaselvam

Clinical Research Fellow


Maryanne read her BSc in Neuroscience at Leeds University and subsequently completed medical training at the Norwich Medical School, East Anglia. She finished her Foundation Training in the Eastern Region and went onto a research post at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn where she led three regional patient safety projects across eleven hospitals in the East of England. Currently, Maryanne is undertaking a doctorate in Patient Safety at the University of Cambridge. 

Her research interests are in the field of patient safety particularly understanding errors in the NHS, human factors, the use of innovation to design engineered solutions to prevent never events and serious adverse events and understanding the barriers to implementation of innovation in healthcare systems. 

Maryanne has published and presented her work at over 50 national and international conferences. She has won the President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement from the Royal College of Anaesthetists, is a fellow on the NHS Innovator Accelerator Programme and two of her safety innovations have been selected onto the programme and are supported for national implementation. 

Maryanne is also a founding fellow of the Q Initiative and is a fellow on the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme and is involved in the development of 4 patient safety innovations. 

Maryanne will be working with Medovate to assist with the technology development activities of the company by undertaking the clinical evaluation and clinical engagement for the portfolio of Medovate's technologies.
